Just completed a round of in-house project management training last week. In the course of trainnig I encouraged trainees to see things from the aspect of Project base. In other words, keep in mind PDCA cycle. Plan, Do, Check, Action. It's very easy to realize and memorize. You got used to adapt WBS and network diagram rather than To-Do list. Major task is often involved with stakeholders who you have to deal with and to find out their requirement then plan in. Anything happen against baselines(scope/time/cost/quality)what you feel is "problem" or treat it as a "change request".

Put it together, Project base thinking is Management thinking you have to

1) dig out sponsors' requirements

2) identify stakeholders' needs and wants and expectations

3) Balance stakeholders' needs/wants/expections due to limited resources you have and you can not fulfill every requirement they mention.

4) Plan in

  • WBS(work breakdown structure)
  • OBS(Organizational breakdown staructure)
  • RAM(Responsibility assignment matrix)
  • Activity duration/cost estimation
  • Network diagram
  • Project schedule(time baseline)
  • Gantt Chart
  • Plan value(cost baseline)
  • Quality management plan
  • Risk managment plan
  • Reiterate from WBS

5) Execution

Follow project management plan to do

6) Control and Monitor

Compare Actual with Baseline to find out variance. Analyze variances to find out root cause(problem solving) then take actions to resolve it. Take preventative action to prevent it from occuring again.

Conduct Change Request Process

Keep updating risk register and issue log

7) Closing

In the end, thanks for 30 attendees and HR Elaine's support we have good thime during 2-day training.
